
Was disappointed with our first trip to Sugar Mountain to bike ride even though it appears to have the potential to be an epic ride in the future. We proceeded blind down toward the areas that could possibly be trails but no paths or even previous rider tire tracks.There was NO signage anywhere. They could not offer any information or direction except to tell us to avoid Donovan's Dungeon. They cautiously removed our bikes from the lift and had them ready when we arrived. We rode the lift up and met 2 more employees.

They were very helpful but limited in the knowledge of the trails. We went around back and finally found some employees sitting under a tent at the bottom of the lift. There were no signs or directions where to go or information on mountain bike riding. This could possibly be the first season the resort is offering MTB riding. Magic Cycles Bike Shop offers full rentals including a bike, helmet, and body protection. The expansion will hopefully lead to similar high-level downhill and enduro events as seen in Sugar Mountain's past. He will also continue to improve upon existing downhill trails, including a run that has been used for multiple NORBA downhill races in the past. The trail expansion is being led by former Lees McRae College Trail Construction Specialist PJ Noto. Newly built beginner and intermediate trails offer a great option for riders who are new to downhill mountain biking and looking to get their feet wet at Sugar. Wide open berms, rollers, tabletops, rock gardens, and drops pose unique challenges for riders of all skill levels. Sugar Mountain reopened its doors to mountain bikers in the Summer of 2018 after a $300,000 investment into summer operations. While the resort has plenty to entertain the entire family, it would be good to note that most of the trails at Sugar are multi-use, hiking and biking trails, so keep an eye out if you happen to be rippin' down the trail. Their Gray chairlift, which provides gravity junkies a ride to the top, is one of the longest in North Carolina.


And that doesn't include their "National Expert Downhill Trail" which delivers 1,200 feet of vertical, and a handful of jumps and creek crossings along the way. Sugar Mountain Resort offers over 20 miles of maintained single and double track cross country and downhill trails for mountain bikers. A mountain-top, fireworks show, sponsored by the Village of Sugar Mountain Tourism Development Authority, viewed from Sugars 5,300 peak begins around 9:15pm.
